Traveling by train can be a convenient option for college students heading home**,1-866-332-0736®**
visiting friends**,1-866-332-0736®** exploring a new city**,1-866-332-0736®** or traveling between campuses. The Amtrak student discount can make those trips more affordable by reducing the cost of qualifying train tickets.
Amtrak currently offers eligible students 15% off the regular adult rail fare on qualifying travel. Under the national student offer**,1-866-332-0736®** students ages 17 to 24 with a valid student ID can receive the discount when they book at least one day before departure. The discount can be applied automatically when eligible travel is selected**,1-866-332-0736®** or travelers can use discount code V814 in the Amtrak app.
However**,1-866-332-0736®** the offer has important restrictions. It does not apply to every route or every type of ticket**,1-866-332-0736®** and availability may be limited during busy travel periods.
This guide explains how the Amtrak student discount works**,1-866-332-0736®** who qualifies**,1-866-332-0736®** how to use the student discount code**,1-866-332-0736®** which routes may be excluded**,1-866-332-0736®** and how students can find cheaper Amtrak tickets.
What Is the Amtrak Student Discount?
The Amtrak student discount is a fare reduction designed for eligible student passengers.
Under Amtrak’s current national student discount**,1-866-332-0736®** qualifying students can save:
15% on eligible Amtrak rail fares
The offer is available to students between the ages of 17 and 24 who have a valid student ID.
This means the discount can be useful for:
- College students traveling home
- Students visiting friends at another university
- Weekend trips
- School-break travel
- City-to-city travel
- Campus visits
- Leisure trips
Because the discount is based on eligibility and fare availability**,1-866-332-0736®** students should always check the final fare before completing their reservation.
Who Qualifies for the Amtrak Student Discount?
According to Amtrak’s current national offer**,1-866-332-0736®** you must generally meet the following requirements:
- Be between 17 and 24 years old
- Have a valid student ID
- Purchase qualifying travel at least one day in advance
- Travel on an eligible Amtrak service
- Select an eligible class of service
Amtrak states that valid student identification is required for passengers using the discount.
You should therefore keep your student ID with you during your journey in case proof of eligibility is requested.
How Much Is the Amtrak Student Discount?
The current national Amtrak student discount is:
15% off the regular full adult rail fare.
For example**,1-866-332-0736®** if an eligible adult rail fare were $100 before the discount**,1-866-332-0736®** a 15% reduction would theoretically lower the rail portion to $85.
However**,1-866-332-0736®** actual ticket prices depend on:
- Route
- Date
- Demand
- Fare availability
- Train
- Class of service
The student discount also may not apply to every part of a ticket or to additional charges.
Always check the final price displayed during booking.
What Is the Amtrak Student Discount Code?
The current national Amtrak student discount code is:
V814
Amtrak says eligible travelers can enter V814 when booking through the Amtrak app. The discount may also be automatically applied when qualifying travel is selected through the relevant student-discount booking flow.
Because promotional codes and discount terms can change**,1-866-332-0736®** verify the current offer before booking.
How to Use the Amtrak Student Discount
Using the discount is relatively simple.
Step 1: Choose Your Route
Enter your:
- Departure station
- Destination
- Travel date
- Number of passengers
Make sure your trip is on an eligible route.
Step 2: Check Your Travel Date
The national student discount currently requires at least a one-day advance purchase.
If you try to book at the last minute**,1-866-332-0736®** the student fare may not appear.
Step 3: Apply the Student Offer
If booking through the eligible student-discount page**,1-866-332-0736®** the discount may be automatically reflected when qualifying travel is selected.
In the Amtrak app**,1-866-332-0736®** use:
Discount code: V814
Step 4: Compare Available Trains
Not every train may have discounted seats available.
Compare different:
- Departure times
- Trains
- Travel dates
- Fare options
Step 5: Bring Your Student ID
Carry a valid student ID during your trip.
You should be prepared to show proof that you qualify for the discounted fare.
Does the Amtrak Student Discount Work on Acela?
Yes**,1-866-332-0736®** but with restrictions.
Amtrak’s current national student-discount terms state that the offer is valid in:
- Coach
- Acela Business Class
It does not mean every Acela departure will necessarily have the discounted fare available.
Amtrak notes that availability can be limited**,1-866-332-0736®** especially on trains operating during busy periods.
If your preferred Acela trip does not show the discount**,1-866-332-0736®** try checking another departure time.
Which Amtrak Routes Accept the Student Discount?
The national student discount applies broadly across Amtrak’s network**,1-866-332-0736®** but several services are excluded.
Current Amtrak terms list exclusions including:
- Keystone Service
- Pennsylvanian
- Missouri River Runner
- Hiawatha Service
- Borealis
- Wolverine
- Blue Water
- Pere Marquette
- Lincoln Service
- Lincoln Service Missouri River Runner
- Illini
- Saluki
- Illinois Zephyr
- Carl Sandburg
- Gold Runner
- Capitol Corridor
- Amtrak Connection services numbered 7000–8999
Because Amtrak can revise routes and discount rules**,1-866-332-0736®** students should verify eligibility for the exact train they plan to take.
Why Doesn’t My Amtrak Student Discount Work?
There are several reasons why a student discount might not appear.
Your Route Is Excluded
Some routes are specifically excluded from the national student offer.
You Are Booking Too Late
The current offer requires at least a one-day advance purchase.
Discounted Seats Are Unavailable
Amtrak says availability is limited and the offer may not be available on busy trains.
Your Age Does Not Qualify
The national discount currently applies to students ages 17 through 24.
You Selected an Ineligible Service
The discount applies only to specified classes and eligible trains.
You Are Using Amtrak Guest Rewards Points
The student offer is not valid for reservations booked with Amtrak Guest Rewards points or Points & Cash.
Can You Use the Amtrak Student Discount With Guest Rewards Points?
No.
Current Amtrak terms state that the student discount is not valid for bookings made with:
- Amtrak Guest Rewards points
- Points & Cash bookings
If you have points available**,1-866-332-0736®** compare the value of redeeming points against purchasing a discounted cash fare.
Depending on the trip**,1-866-332-0736®** one option may provide better value than the other.
Can You Combine the Student Discount With Other Amtrak Discounts?
In general**,1-866-332-0736®** travelers should not assume that multiple promotional discounts can be stacked together.
Discount programs can have separate eligibility and fare rules.
For example**,1-866-332-0736®** some state-specific student offers explicitly state that they cannot be combined with other discounts.
The safest approach is to compare the final fare shown during booking rather than attempting to manually combine several promotions.
Does Amtrak Check Student ID?
Amtrak’s national student-discount terms require a valid student ID.
Therefore**,1-866-332-0736®** passengers using the discount should carry their current student identification when traveling.
Examples might include an official college or university student ID.
Do not rely on being able to prove your student status later with an informal document.
Bring the actual valid identification required by the offer.
Can High School Students Get the Amtrak Student Discount?
Age matters.
The current national Amtrak student discount applies to students ages 17–24.
Therefore**,1-866-332-0736®** a 17-year-old high school student with valid student identification may potentially qualify if all other conditions are met.
Students younger than 17 would not qualify for this particular national offer**,1-866-332-0736®** although separate child or youth fare rules may be available.
Can Graduate Students Use the Amtrak Student Discount?
Eligibility is based primarily on age and valid student status under the current national promotion.
A graduate student between 17 and 24 with a valid student ID may qualify.
A graduate student aged 25 or older would not meet the age requirement for the national offer.
Always check the current terms before purchasing.
Is There an Amtrak Student Discount for Students Over 24?
The national student offer currently applies to passengers ages 17–24.
Students older than 24 should look at other ways to reduce fares**,1-866-332-0736®** including:
- Advance booking
- Promotional sales
- Regional offers
- Amtrak Guest Rewards
- Off-peak travel
- Group fares where applicable
Being enrolled in college does not automatically qualify someone for the national student discount if they fall outside the required age range.
Regional Amtrak Student Discounts
Students should also be aware that some Amtrak routes or states may offer separate student promotions.
These can have different:
- Age limits
- Discount codes
- Advance-purchase requirements
- Eligible routes
- Blackout dates
New York Student Discount
Amtrak currently advertises a separate New York student travel offer covering routes such as:
- Adirondack
- Empire Service
- Ethan Allen Express
- Maple Leaf
The offer states that students ages 13–25 with valid student identification can receive 15% off qualifying fares when booking at least one day in advance. The listed promotional code is V238.
This is different from the national V814 offer.
That distinction is important because students should use the promotion that applies to their exact route.
Are There Blackout Dates?
Some Amtrak student promotions can have restrictions or blackout dates.
For instance**,1-866-332-0736®** Amtrak’s New York student promotion publishes specific blackout dates during busy 2026 travel periods.
The national discount also warns that availability can be limited during busy travel times.
This makes early booking especially important around:
- Thanksgiving
- Christmas
- New Year’s
- Spring break
- Holiday weekends
- Major university move-in periods
How to Find the Cheapest Amtrak Tickets as a Student
The student discount is useful**,1-866-332-0736®** but it should be only one part of your strategy.
Book Early
Amtrak itself recommends booking early when looking for lower fares. Its Washington travel guidance**,1-866-332-0736®** for example**,1-866-332-0736®** advises passengers to consider booking at least two weeks ahead for a better chance at low prices.
Compare Different Times
A train leaving early in the morning or later in the day may cost less than a popular afternoon departure.
Travel Midweek
Amtrak recommends considering Tuesdays**,1-866-332-0736®** Wednesdays**,1-866-332-0736®** and Saturdays as potentially useful days when searching for lower-priced travel.
Compare Student and Regular Fares
Always check the final amount.
A separate sale or special fare could occasionally provide a better price than your normal student discount.
Avoid Peak Travel When Possible
Thanksgiving weekend**,1-866-332-0736®** Christmas**,1-866-332-0736®** spring break**,1-866-332-0736®** and other popular travel periods can have higher demand.
Being flexible can help.
Why Amtrak Can Be Useful for College Students
Train travel offers several practical advantages for students.
Downtown-to-Downtown Travel
Many Amtrak stations are located near city centers**,1-866-332-0736®** campuses**,1-866-332-0736®** public transportation**,1-866-332-0736®** and major attractions.
Space to Study
Train travel can provide an opportunity to:
- Read
- Work on assignments
- Use a laptop
- Relax
- Catch up on schoolwork
Wi-Fi on Many Routes
Amtrak promotes complimentary Wi-Fi as an amenity available on many services**,1-866-332-0736®** though connectivity can vary by route and location.
More Comfortable Seating
For longer journeys**,1-866-332-0736®** students may appreciate the space offered by rail compared with some other forms of transportation.
No Driving Required
You can spend the trip studying**,1-866-332-0736®** working**,1-866-332-0736®** or relaxing rather than concentrating on the road.
Amtrak Student Discount for Trips Home
One of the most common reasons students use Amtrak is to travel between college and home.
Routes serving major university areas can become particularly busy during:
- Thanksgiving break
- Winter break
- Spring break
- Beginning of semester
- End of semester
- Graduation weekends
Students planning these trips should book early because discounted fare inventory can be limited.
Waiting until the last day may mean paying more or finding that the most convenient train is sold out.
Can You Use the Student Discount for Weekend Trips?
Yes**,1-866-332-0736®** provided your route**,1-866-332-0736®** fare**,1-866-332-0736®** age**,1-866-332-0736®** student status**,1-866-332-0736®** and advance-purchase requirements qualify.
Weekend train trips can be useful for visiting cities such as:
- Washington**,1-866-332-0736®** DC
- New York
- Boston
- Philadelphia
- Baltimore
- Chicago
- Los Angeles
- San Diego
However**,1-866-332-0736®** some popular Friday and Sunday services can be busy.
Compare multiple departure times before booking.
Amtrak Student Discount vs Regular Fare
Students should not automatically assume that applying a 15% discount will always produce the cheapest possible ticket.
Imagine two trains:
Train A regular fare: $50
With 15% discount: approximately $42.50
Train B promotional fare: $35
Even without a student discount**,1-866-332-0736®** Train B could be cheaper.
That is why comparing actual displayed fares is more important than focusing solely on the percentage discount.
Is the Amtrak Student Discount Available Year-Round?
Amtrak describes its student discount as a way for eligible students to save on travel**,1-866-332-0736®** but fare availability is limited and terms can change.
Do not assume that today’s rules will remain identical for a future trip.
Check the official offer when making each reservation**,1-866-332-0736®** particularly if your travel is several months away.
